Uma Kalu Oke teaches and supervises students at various academic levels in different field of Animal science with special research interest in improvement of the productive adaptability of indigenous Poultry and livestock in the humid tropics, environment impact assessment of livestock interventions and recombinant DNA technology. Members of several Scientific networks, locally and internationally and have published several papers and conference proceedings with technical contents .He was one time Deputy Dean College of Animal Science and Animal production (CASAP). Programme leader, Animal Production and improvement programme. In 2009, he travelled to the Centre for Integrated Bio-system, Utah State University ,USA, for a study in Genome sequencer system, microbial fermentation, development and scale up which assisted him in his molecular studies. He is the first and current Head, Department of Animal Breeding and Physiology, where he is providing academic leadership in the university community.
